Theme #1: Friendship
Friendship plays a huge role in this story. At first, it is extremely easy to tell, because David is always talking about his best friend Elliot. Also, David has a friend at home, his hamster Hammy. Deeper into the book, though, it is hard to identify where the true friendship is. No matter how small, you can still just barely notice that tiny sliver a friendship left between them, though. During that time you can see the bond of friendship forming between David and the new girl Sophie. At the end of the story, the reader is relieved to see Elliott and David, best friends forever, live up to just that.

Theme #2: Hope
Hope is the other theme I have chosen for this book is hope. In my eyes, the character in this novel that is the most hopeful is David Greenberg. David hopes for lots of things. He hopes for his, "best friend," back, hopes to be the next Jon Stewart, and definitely hopes to get through middle school easier. But most of all, outweighing all the other things, he hopes with all of his heart for his mom to come back home, where she belongs. This theme is very important in this story, and so overpowering that it somehow makes the reader hopeful, too.
